Graeme’s grandfather served on the Western Front during WW1. During WW2 his father was a Prisoner of War in Changi and on the Burma Railway while his father-in-law served in Dutch New Guinea.

As a student of military history, Graeme has attended ANZAC Day Services at Hellfire Pass and Gallipoli as well as visiting the D-Day Beaches and the Western Front.

Graeme has developed a suite of historical presentations which might be of interest to clubs and associations seeking to have a deeper understanding of the following conflicts/battles:

  • 2/2 Independent Company in East Timor during WW2
  • Battle at Lone Pine, Gallipoli
  • Evacuation from Gallipoli
  • Battle at Fromelles, Western Front

How It Started

I found a tin containing my Grandfather’s medals and some photographs of him in uniform while on leave in London from the Western Front. I realised that I knew very little about his military service so I started to look for information to enable me to understand where he served and in what circumstances.

This led to a friend asking me to research his Grandfather. We discovered that he had been at Gallipoli, commissioned in the field and awarded the Military Medal for bravery on the Western Front.

Everyone Has a Story

History tells us about those who won bravery awards but the reality is that the great majority of service personnel were ordinary folk who did their job (riflemen, cooks, signallers, nurses, drivers) for many years in demanding and dangerous circumstances. They did their duty –most came home but others didn’t. We owe it to our Grandchildren and Great Grandchildren to document their story and wear their medals on special days.

Sometimes we discover that Grandfather enjoyed his leave so much in London or Cairo that he was late returning to his Unit and ended up being fined by his Commanding Officer.
